what engine 412

is there anyway to easy se difference on a 1,7 and 1,8 engine
i have located a 412 and a 412le variant
the owner dont know what engine is in it.
so if i in some easy way could explain to him to see the difference
over the phone maybe i dont make a 200 mil trip for nothing

Have him check the engine number. If it is EBxxxx or ECxxxx, then it is 1,8. Anything else is a 1,7.

Thats only true in California....I think...because I have found examples in ea and eb of 1.7L quite commonly. The best way to tell is to look at the part # on the head under the rocker arms. Ray

The engine code also fails you when someone's overhauled the engine and changed it from its original bore (easy to do with the T4 design), like mine. It's a Federal EA code engine, should have been a 1.7L, but it was rebuilt 10 years ago as a 1.8L.

I routinely take 1.7 cases and turn them into 2 litre engines, the codes are a good starting point but usually can be wrong.
