Gas gauge always overfull!

Last week I drained the gas tank and hoped to discard the sock filter, but someone had beat me to it already :( . Flushed the tank, removed the sending unit and checked the rust situation (fairly throughout and must be treated in due time). Put everything back together, put 2 gals in it and noticed the needle reading WAY overfull. figured sending unit float probably hanging. filled her up, no change. Drove her a 100 miles freeway, no change. Today I took a second look at the sending unit and concluded that unplugging the ground wire doesn't move the needle, this means to me that it is not grounding properly. If so, what do I ned to do to remedy that? thanks for any ideas guys.

you are sure ,you d,t mix wire on the plug-in connection , if not, remoove and put the sender on table and multi-meter look your meter if the needle move wend you slide the gage flot ,albert

Hey thanks for the pic Albert. I will do the test soon but I'll tell ya, that sending unit looked pretty beat when I took it out. was covered in rust and calk deposit. Are those sending units still available or interchangeable with others vws?

Fueling stick maybe,lol!

Hey longbeach, are you saying the gauge reads high? Hey guys can he ground the wire going to the sensor and see if the gauge is working? Did you clean up the sender when you had it out? I cant remember if the float can come off but you would think that would make it read low? I doubt you bent the rod when you had it out. Sounds like you need to pull it and test the range when you move the arm.... Wonder how you calibrate those things to the tank? Bill

Yea, it reads overfull all the time regardless. About a 1/4 past the full mark. The float is BTW intact and the rod was not altered in any way. I will be testing it tonight but I wonder if there is a certain orientation that should be maintained for the sending unit. I remember from years back my 74 bus sending unit had to go in pointing in a specific direction. I still like to replace it if possible. its in sad shape!
