Flow through or Blow through?

Post by CptanPanic2 »

I was just wondering the pro's and con's of each. Here is what I have so far:

Flow Through - Easier to make, easy on carbs, easier to run high pressure.

Blow Through - More power?, Better mpg?

Flow through or Blow through?

Most suck through systems that I have seen stick out from the engine compartment so forget closing the decklid. The blow through could allow a hide-away system.

Flow through or Blow through?

There's quite a lot of info regarding the differences between the two, but to keep things brief:

PROs of suck thru system (on an ACVW): utilizes stock intake system, fuel pump, and almost any carburetor; simpler construction; cheaper; used kits readily available; no BOV (blow-off valve) required

CONs of suck thru system: turbo is located in the engine compartment (which translates into a LOT of extra heat); can't be intercooled easily; suffers from icing below 50 degrees F

PROs of blow thru system: much easier to intercool; no icing; better throttle response; lower emissions; ideal for EFI cars

CONs of blow thru system: usually more expensive, even when compared to new suck thru systems; high pressure fuel delivery system required

If there are kits readily available where do I find one? Also how much should I expect to pay ?

KRE, Turbo City, and Bernie Bergmann still make suck through kits for Bugs, but decklid stand-offs are usually required. These systems require a carb, which usually isn't included (due to their scarcity).

Turbo City, CB Performance, Fischer Engineering, and Bernie Bergmann sell blow thru systems (the first two being available only in EFI versions nowadays).

As for price... hold on to your hat. A *complete* EFI turbo kit from CB Performance starts at $3,000 US. If you are serious about going *that* route, visit my website for pros and cons of the ACVW EFI world.
