has anybody checked to see if there is enough room to tuck a turbo behind the apron, in front of the motor like on the c.b. set up for the type 1?

sedan turbo for type 4
It will be tight. I'm looking at the same thing, squeezing a 2.0L Type 4 with blow through turbo into the back of a 68 bug. I made my rear apron removable to help get the engine in & out, & it appears that if you fabricate your own exhaust, a turbo could be made to work. What I was looking at was mounting the turbo toward the passenger side of the engine, with the compressor outlet basically between the #2 cylinder sheetmetal & the apron. Another idea was mentioned somewhere else in the Forum on building a "hidden" system, with the turbo in the transmission area, say on the drivers side, opposite the starter motor. This helps with space at the apron, but could be a tight squeeze around the rear suspension. Good luck!

Watch the height of the Turbo compared to the oil drain-back location.
