That can't be a thing shroud. That must be off an old 40HP engine, am I right?

Yeah...non-fresh 40hp style. Might have come off some industrial engine too.

That's about how much I paid for my real Thing shroud a few years ago... :P

I emailed the guy and asked him to explain and he said "All I can tell you is it came off a thing". lol

1973 Things without fresh air heating had this kind of shroud, but they would have had doghouse oil coolers.

Can someone tell me why 73 Thing shrouds are so expensive anyway? Are they good for something other than a Thing? I saw one on Samba the other day for $250. Why is the demand high for these?

I have an extra one because I purchased a whole Thing engine about a year ago localy, (for less than $250). I was planning to keep it incase I upgrade my engine leaving the original 1600 DPI one intact. If they really bring $250 this will be hard to do.

The only reason they are desireable is because they do not have the heater outlets like every Beetle shroud does. If you have a big engine with no heaterboxes, you don't need the heater outlets. With dual carbs, the lack of the heater outlets makes it easy to access your carb's adjustments/mounting bolts.

So many that buy them, at these expensive prices, use them for non Thing applications?

That's a silly question. Glenn has pictures of everything from every angle. lol

A thought just crossed my mind -- it's possible that the eBay shroud is from a very early 1500cc Type 181. But I still doubt it. 8)

It can't be. 1973 Things had 1600DP engines, which had doghouse oil coolers. Look at the back of the tin in question -- it wouldn't work on a post-1971 engine!
