Hey guys- is it me or is this forum just painfully slow? I know that not everyone has a lot of time but it sure seems that this is really slow-
I wonder if there is anyone that is autoX a bug (super) because I would really like to hear what their views/attitudes about the suspension are and how they apply them to their cars
I would also like to know if most of the autoX cars are using the TI or have gone to a water cooled or TIV
thanks for everyones time

I'm curious as well, I have a '73 Super but it's still in Arizona and not running. I will be moving it to Louisiana sometime this fall. I have 924T brakes all around, KYBs up front with 944 lowering springs, 16" 928S rims, and a half roll cage installed. I have a super 1600 in my '66 bus now and will probably put that into the bug until I can build up a T4, at least that's the plan for now. I plan to autocross the bug(it will probably be in E prepared or E mod), but the suspension is way to stiff right now for the street so I'm going to have to get some taller 16" tires and an extra set of 15s for auto-x. I auto-x my Golf for now and am still learning quite a bit, especially about oversteer recently since I hooked up a very stiff rear sway bar. If I free up some more time, I'd also like to do some driving schools and track days with either one of the cars. The super has a lot of potential to be all sorts of other cars, maybe not in FSP with drum brakes and 50 hp, but...

Super's do offer a few more options in the front suspension area, while the rear is the same as a standard Beetle. Engine choices depend on what type of racing/auto-x'ing your doing, different groups have different rules. I know in SCCA, putting a water-cooler or a t4 would bump you up into the modified classes against some pretty substantial cars. If you're considering vintage road racing, then you're limited to a T1 of original displacement.

Hop over to www.superbeetlesonly.com where there's a great deal of information about suspension setups, as well as wide array of engine choices (both air & water cooled) being used by the members.

there are no hard and fast rules:

T1 and T4 are both good choices,
as are standard and super.

i run a T1 standard in StreetModified,
but i'd be perfectly happy to have built
up a T4 super instead.

some standard front end advantages:
tougher, more forgiving, easy to setup

some super front end advantages:
mcpherson strut really is a damn good idea, ultimately easier to make adjustments to get that last 10% of suspension tune.

some T1 advantages:
more HP per dollar, easier to work on if want to build it yourself

some T4 advantages:
done right very durable, VW really did make design improvements

read the rule book, and get your butt in the seat... : )
