Hi,
I am new here and have a question. There's not much info or resources on 412's over here in the uk. I have just seen a car on ebay that has a reserve. It's been pictured in another thread on lowered 412 sqr. Thinking about selling the bug and going 412. Can anyoneone advise the going rate. Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks
Lawrence

Beautiful car. Be very wary of anyone who tells you it has a full proffessional restoration. The parts to do that...are not...and have not been available since I was in high school in the late 70's early 80's. Not here...not in Europe. But...there are several excellent ways to get around this that are acceptable.....but make the owner prove everything that has been done . Most important will be rubber parts.
Also....the type 25 engine is less impressive than teh 1700 for longevity. For very little...the 1700 can put out more than the type 25. But...if itssolid and has papers cool.
Make damn sure shat has been done to teh suspension. Parts ar unobtanium. It may look snazzy...and ride well...but if its incorrectly....or un-completely done...it will destroy parts.
That car should be worth about $2500-3500. Thats what the market will bear.
The owner is the one advertizing this as a show car. It is worth up to $4000 as it sits on teh strength of its appearance alone. If he wants more....he must prove that the work was done responsibly and to show quality.
That inludes : how the hydraulics were restored, how the joints and bushings were strengthened to allow the use of the uprated strut system, the improvements and restorations of the 4 speed...that are a 100% requirement to allow the tranny to survive, how the window gaskets and fender weltingwere replaced...and a list of other things. But...if you can meet the reserve...thats a nice car. Ray

It's a nice looking custom, but I have a few problems with the ad.
First off, a '72 412? Ok......
It's a cool looking car, but it's nothing more. It's not some ultra rare car, just a nice condition custom Type 4.

Deluxe model? Never heard of a "Deluxe" model. This is a rare delux model which has many rare crome details along with factory rear heated windscreen, petrol heater and parking lights.
Rare? The vinyl roof was a customization a previous owner did. I've never seen one either, but I wouldn't say it's rare. The vinal roof is Exeptionally rare
Factory ragtop? On a Type 4? Yeah right. The last VW to get a ragtop from the factory was the '67 Transporter. My list of M-codes does not list a ragtop sunroof. The BEST BIT is the factory fitted delmote rag top roof, with pop wind deflector. this is a large rag top which is in exellent condition, it certanly doesnt leak.

Hey thanks for the advice Ray and Tuna,
It helped me reign in my infatuation with the look of that sweet ghostbuster-rude-mobile. : ) It's much better to think logically.
After reading Rays comments on the other post about the consequences of unresearched lowering, and your insights tuna I don't feel so bad about losing out. It's knowing enough about them to see through the worded spin and hype. Ray when you were talking about the suspension and said part's are 'unobtanium'; do I take it you meant unobtainable or 'are obtainable'?
I think it's going for about £2200, but my what a pretty car.
Thanks again

Hundy--
I don't know if you've checked this out yet, but since you're in the UK be sure to visit the Type 3 and 4 Club at http://www.vwtype3and4club.org.uk/ or http://www.hallvw.clara.net/ (they've been 'moving' for some time now).
To quote:
"The club can also supply valuations and certificates to help with insurance and registration matters.
There is a stock of club-owned parts available economically, and we can advise where to locate ‘difficult’ items. The club also has a free-loan members' video library of VW training films and general interest material with the accent on VW."
So they are probably available locally to advise you on this car.
