...has a small amount of play. I hate wear on my VW's.

Does anyone have a p/n or know of another cars bearing that does the job properly?

LOL! Yuppers! Ray or Tuna! I cant remember if its a sleeve piece or a actual bearing which you might pull it and match it at a bearing store? There is a rubber bushing I think that holds the shaft tube? bill

Assuming you are talking about what would be known in the States as the strut bearing or strut mount this is the same part that was used on the Super Beetles. It is possible to buy the entire mount with mounting plate, rubber insert and the bearing for about $100 US (Mid-America Motorworks, http://www.mamotorworks.com/) or you can just buy the rubber insert for about $10-15 US. Don't have any idea how to install the rubber insert into an old mounting flange as the original is bonded in place. Maybe Ray has some ideas here on how to replace just the rubber insert.

There are early and late varients of the mount the early has a symmetrical bolt pattern and the late has an assymmetrical bolt pattern. Yours probably is symmetrical.

A couple things. For one, there is a spring type bushing. It usually looks like shiny plated steel with a flange on the top side. It is crimped into an accordian style shape. It is a simple spring bushing that pushes in around teh steering shaft to keep axial rattleing away. It is sometimes missing if the PO tore it up. They are the same part for late bug, type 3 and 4.

Or...are you speaking of the ball bearing that is in some of them? I will look in my parts list tonight. Sorry...been working hard. Not online enough. Ray
