Are 412 rotor and or calipers common to any other AC VW?
I know about pre 72 being type 3.

Yes, they were common to the 914. Also, my brake guys tell me that numerous Euro vehicles used basically the same caliper. Many of them used it on teh rear. I think some Volvos and Saabs used it on the rear. Ray

You might also look at the caliper swap many of the 914 guys do. Calipers from the E21 BMW 320i will fit and are supposed to be substantially better than the stock calipers. I believe they are a direct fit for earlier 914's and need slight mods for later. It should be the same for Type 4's. The Pelican Parts website should have the details. That being said, I used to own a 320i, and I don't remember the brakes being that impressive. However, I think have been spoiled by excellent brakes on my GTI VR6.

I'm looking at my calipers today, if they need new seals, I might look at the 320 swap.

I have looked into the BMW calipers as well, and apparently (this could be a europe only thing) you don't have a 320i with a solid, non vented disk/rotor over here.
You need the 320 4-cylinder brakes, which is also the E21 model...or so I was told by a bmw-guy...
I thought, since I already have the BMW springs...
Anyway, will receive an overhauled set shortly because there's only one way to find out if they work

Just be sure to take a close look at the differences in the early 914 rotors...if you are installing this mod on a 411. Those rotors...without the raised strengthening ring....flex badly. The calipers had a center pin under teh piston with whaqt was effectively a locking clutch. This helped to keep the piston from cocking in teh bore from teh flex. In early models without that pin...the cocking of the piston would cause it to momentarily lock....causing brake drag until it retracted. since i doubt that the BMW caliper had tehse pins...you might enquire as to wether those who used this conversion on the earlier model of the 914...had any brake dragging or sticking issues.
the later rotor is much better if you are staying with stock rotors. It had no flexing issues. Ray
