Formula Super Vee questions
I was wondering if the SCCA has an aircooled Super Vee class. If so, is this the one that allows for use of type 4 aircooled motors? Is it still active? Where can I get more information on this?
Thanks in advance,
E

I race my Beetle in the Solo2 catergory of scca. It's a track set up in a parking lot with cones and chalk (or flour!) Air cooled Beetles and all other rear drive vw's fall into HS. That's H as in slowest class and S as in stock. Only a few mods are allowed in Stock. Wider wheels isn't one of them. The problem in this class is the new minis. The "s" isn't in our class but the plain ones are. They may get moved up in class, but not this year. If you move up to wider wheels, dual carbs, and a few other things and you end up in FSP. F as in the slowest and SP as in Street Prepared. After that it's a few more classes and VW's always at the bottom as far as class ranking, but we can do alright depending on the course and the driver. It's more about fun really. There are other types of racing in the scca but I don't know about in your area. Check out their site. scca.org
I think they still have a formula vee class. BUt with 12 meets in my region for solo2 and only 3 for road races, plus loads more money, it's easy for me to decide.

That's cool. I definitely want to to the SOLO thing. I have this friend in FL who is willing to go halves with me on a Formula Vee. I was looking at Super vee information, and I like the idea of an aircooled engine. Since I have plenty of parts and experience with them.
It is definitely not going to be a next day thing, but I would love to plan it well, and get the facts straight. Right now, for AutoX, the Ghia will do just fine.

The ghia is a good choice as it has the discs up front. Download the solo2 rules from scca's website. Get in contact with your local regions club as well. Mine down here has a great website that includes a link to register for the race when it's coming up. Plus don't be afraid to ask all sorts of questions on their forum.
You can get 185/65 15 tires on the stock wheels. Make sure you have a good brake pedal, no sponge! Check your wheel bearings the night before. Add an extra 1/2 quart of oil. You'll need it for the long turns to avoid pump stavation and lower end knock that comes with it.
I ran a swing axle UK spec 1200 for two races. four runs the first race and 6 runs in the second one three weeks latter. I did beat people the second time around. I had 165s all around and the were old!. Most of the courses that get set up are second gear and maybe third for a brief spot. I heard that the nationals in topeka are high third gear. Get some stiff shocks as well. Good luck and post results here on this site. If you want to see a real fast beetle, check out plumracer on superbeetlesonly.com. He's got a 195 horse wrx motor and road races it. There are pictures on the website of him out cornering a Porsche or two! Have fun, greg

Cool, thanks Volks! I already downloaded the rules, and went to my local club's site. I guess I fall more in the DC area than anything else. I unfortunately(
) have disc brakes all the way around and very good braking coupled with a big 2270cc type 4 engine. I think I may run with bigger boys, but maybe they won't even let me.

I believe he is right, that would put you in SM. More for the non stock motor (no type 4 power came stock in the ghia) It's all in the rules, just poke around, ask on the club site. But look first in the book so you don't look like a dweeb. trust me. Get some real tires, 7''and as sticky as you can afford. I like to use tirerack.com to compare tires, get specs on sizing and reviews on how people liked them. Usually you can find someone who has used the tire you're looking at for autocrossing and that helps. Get some serious shocks and sway bars on the car and you should be good to go! I'm more of a fan of normal springs, huge sway bars. aircooled.net has some ajustable race units for about 190 an end. Real good stuff from them. Check out the tech article section for making the car stick.

On the subject of the seatbelts. What year is the car? Also, I've never owned a Ghia before, do they have a seat in the back, or a parcel shelf? Any car manufactured or imported into the US after 1966 (beginning with1967 model year) is required to have seatbelts if I read it right, just to be sold. Anyone else heard this before? As far as tire fitment goes, think 50 series tires and maybe they will fit, if you can't get an acurate measurement before, then stick with 6" and use a 215 50 15. I don't think it will rub. There must be some information somewhere here or on the samba about what will fit.

A real Formula Super Vee car these days would fall into the evil AM class. There was a guy from Richmond that ran the 2L T4 with 2 triple plane wings to give it some stick a few years back.
I think you would fall into SM2 with the Ghia. Locally that class is ruled by a +300hp Miata and a very good driver who scares off the Vetts.
I recommend a 7x16 wheel to clear the ball joints and some sticky autocross tires. Good luck and have fun!!
