hello, we can make interchange , the 412 -70-71 stearing weell with the 412 -73-74 , for me i prefaire the 1971 stearing look ,,t,,,model and i want to change that on my 412 -73 thanks for your help,,albert

I have got a spare 411 steering wheel if you are interested. I will take a picture in the coming days and email you after Christmas. I have no idea how much shipping will be from NL to Canada.

Okay, has anyone tried this? I too have a '71 3-spoke type-4 wheel amongst my parts stash (just cuz I like 'em), and I was gonna put it into my '68 type-3 Fastback. Now that I've got this 412, I'd like to put it into this car.

I know it fits the splines in my '68, but I was curious if they changed the splines/shaft with the '72-and-up collaspeable steering wheel arrangement.

Does anyone know if this will simply slip onto a '72-and-later car?

Well, I answered my own question: Yes, the wheel fits on the '72 and later splines, but there's quite the difference in hub height with the two steering wheels. The '71 and older 3-spoke unit is quite a bit taller than the '72-and-later 4-spoke unit. I bolted mine onto the '73 412, and it positions the wheel a lot closer to your chest.

Drat! And I was looking forward to using this wheel in this car. Looks a little too ridiculous being that far from the dashboard.

So.....if anyone was wondering, that's the scoop.

Don't stop yet. So the hub height is different...meaning that teh gap is different right? So reach under the dash by the column. Loosen teh pinch bolt in the access hole on the right...and slide the metal part topward the driver. Itshould move about 1/2". Ray

It's not the hub gap that's the issue; when you place both wheels side-by-side, rim-side down on a flat surface, you can see there's a depth difference. The '71 wheel is 1-3/4 inches taller than the '73 wheel.

When mounted on the column/steering shaft, the turn-signal and wiper arms are awkwardly further away from the rim of the steering wheel, and it's noticeably closer to your chest. I was quite dissapointed.

Oh well, I guess I'll save it for my '68 type-3 fastback.

Dang!.....that would suck. So...I trust that the 71 has longer levers? One of the really nice things about VW's...is the perfect fingertip positioning and nice feel of the blinker, wiper and brights levers. Ray
