Post by SA TYPE IV »

:? hi everyone new here first post, searched for info on site could not find. here goes;I have a 71' 411 1.7 that was originally fuel injected but was missing part to get running, so i converted it to carbs. I put dual dell 36s on it, it does run but i'm getting some popping out of carbs. I wanted to adjust the valves but need help on the best or proper way to do it. would appreciate the help.

Buy your self a Haynes or other manual that either covers Type 4's or cover the Bus/Transporters from 72-79. The bus used the same engine as the Type 4 so all the engine information will be the same.

Yep...get a manual. But, there are some easier ways than what teh book says.

First take of the distributor cap. Put the car in neutral and turn the engine via the alternator.....so the rotor is moving counter clockwise. Bring the rotor around so that it is pointing to the notch on the distributor body. It should be pointing to teh 4 or 5 o lock position as you are looking at it. Pull the plastic plug from the hole in the cooling housing. If the little "0" is showing in the "V" notch in teh cooling housing....you are at TDC for #1. Adjust both the exhaust and intake on cylinder #1.

Now...still turning the engine so the rotor is moving counterclockwise...tuen until teh rotor has moved exactly 180 degrees from the notch on the distributor. That will be TDC for #2. Adjust both valves. Turn counterclockwise until the rotor is back on the notch on the distributor. That will be TDC for #3. Adjust both valves. Turn counterclockwise until the rotor moves back to the spot at 180 degrees fromn teh notch...where you adjusted #2. This will be #4. Adjust both valves.

This actually works best if you first take off the fan and make a mark exactly 180 degress from teh zero. Ray

?? Shouldn't that read 90 degrees rotor movement instead of 180 ?

When the engine turns 180 degrees, the rotor does 90 degrees to reach the next cylinder...

Or you probably meant 'the engine has moved exactly 180 degrees'

Well I guess a should'nt have crossed my fingers, tried to adjust valves but adjusters were just to worn or stripped out on #1 that I could'nt get them to turn even when I pulled the rocker off. I tried all others and had same problem. I'm going to let them soak and see if they break loose if not I'll be looking for some good used or new ones. Later guys.
