TDTA (a new beginning)

Post by Kubelmann »

As many of you know, many of us Thing owners have been attempting to get a Thing Door Throughout Americas for many years. Last season we came close to getting it going but Mike got hurt and blah blah blah. I would like to get this going early because as Sal and I have noticed. "Spring is Just Around the Corner.?

I have an extra (although funky) Thing door. It is not nice enough (in my opinion) to use as TDTA door but I am completely willing to donate it including shipping it to Scott in Toronto where the sticker is... But there are also perhaps others who have a better door than mine to donate... And then there is Mike... I am getting to Sal's point.... especially about the door..... I know a guy in Florida who has some doors. He is a very cool (diehard) Thingster.. He is not on this list but he is on the "other" Thing Forums. I am going to post a new topic on STF with the subject line "TDTA is Just Around the Corner" To enlist new folks. If anyone on this list lives close enough to Mike, how about a drive by talking. At least we could get the door and camera. I would gladly pay shipping to get both items to Scott and have the sticker applied and get this dream "on the road again".. K-mann

For this wonderful idea to truly have a real chance for success, the participant base needs to be widen to the fullest extent possible.
To me this means appealing to as many Thing owners/enthusiasts as possible, in every venue available, nationwide, to maximize the number of participants.
This includes all forums...STF, Topica, The Samba, and places like the 181 Registry. No venues should be excluded from the announcements and news updates concerning the event.
Adequate planning and sufficient numbers of participants will help insure success.
The more the merrier!

I agree that we should post invations to every Thing forum possible.. But as we know from before it will take a group of oroganizers to even get it off the ground. The list of folks from various states still is posted on our Yahoo site... Perhaps we should start my agreeing to certain tasks.

1. Sal goes the NY and get the door and camera.

2. He drives it home from NY to NY> so that will be one state down 49 + other inportrant regions to go..

3. Sal mails it to Scot or (gets) to Scott in Toronto....

4. Scott applies sticker and gets it to John Haskell//////

5. Once we get to that point we will inlist the well known skills of ztnoo. He will have already contacted the folks from the data base to get our rhythm and route scouted... He will alos spread the word on all other known Thing proums and news paths....

6. I will monitor from this forum as we see this progress. I will take a larger role as needed as also once the door crosses the Mississippi I will start to funnel its path so it end up at its birthplace the VW museum in Pueba... But not before it goes to ans many Thing owners as are willing to join in this fun...

&. How does this sound. I am very open to any and all ideas (This post just being one more idea.)

ok, here is the story from my side:

last year i offered to decorate the door. i designed the artwork for the door and teeshirt and it was ready to go. the door sticker was going to be made by a graphics company i use to when i do freelance film graphics - i still have to work in film since germansupply.com is not my only income source. i was going to have the door done for "free", or more precisely, paid for by one of the other jobs i was doing. but by the time i received the door, i was no longer working on a job, and no other film work happened - i could no longer get the job done for free. this issue was only one of many that seemed to plague what should have been a great idea and plan. it still CAN be a great plan and i will do whatever i can to help it along.

i have the door at my shop and i am able to do the graphics on it - i am working on a film right now, for about 12 weeks. it will be no problem to have the sticker made and applied within a month or so, at no cost.

"I know a guy in Florida who has some doors. He is a very cool (diehard) Thingster.."

I'll make an arogant assumption that this is me. I'm willing to donate a door to a worthy cause, but I have a slight problem in that I volunteered to carry (or "drive") this door, but I was overlooked. So I donate a door but am not allowed to participate.....

This is a problem for me.

Uh Oh... I guess I have just proven the old addage about the word assume// ass u me it makes it out of/////

So here is where we stand now.

Scott has door (Scott do you alos ahve Don's camera?)

Scott is in the process of gettingthe sticker applied in the next Month.

Bucko was correct in his assumption that I was refering to him as a possible door donor. But he was incorrect in thinking he was not inviited to transport the door.

The TDTA is nothing like that. I believe that everyone who has worked on this has hoped all along that as many Thing owners as possible mount the door on their Thing take a picture post it on the web site and transfer the door and camera to the next willing participant.

I appologize for any misunderstanding I may have caused. MY dream is to put that door on every possible Thing running or not.... There was a guy last season who asked if he could put the door on his Thing and push the Thing down the road.. That idea was met wiht roaring approval. So folks even volunteered to travel to the guys house to help push...

Thing Doors Thorughout America (and as many other countires as possible) May 2005 - Until WE get it done...

Scott,
If you need any help, meaning some financial support, to produce the door sticker, please let me know. I'd be happy to lend some modest assistance.

btw, how long have you had the door? That was real news to everyone.
Everyone was under the distinct impression MB still had the door......
What about the camera? Did that get shipped with the door to you?

In this quest we need contact from AirCooled Scott and PunkinFair Scott

Great Scott(s)

I think we have three goals to accomplish by Feb.

Get sticker on Door.
Get Door to Bucko in Florida
Find the camera.

Sub goals
Get aircooled to unlock the files issue so all members can add to docs.
Get the database down to one goal
Get the Door traveled from Toronto to NY, CN and other points on its way to FL

If the door with sticker applied and camera in tow gets to Bucko by February, we can do a awesome Spring kick off by having his take it to GERMANY and get kick off shots of the door on a Thing in Germany. That will give us a Thing door that WE have taken to Canada, USA and Germany.... We have fair passed to and back from Hawaii, and more...

Lets git er dun.......

I leave for Germany on the 21st. It would be a gas to take it with me then, if this is possible. There are two places it would go; one military thing owner in Veirnhiem (just outside of Mannhiem), and our military junkyard buddy (Ralf) in Bavaria.

I have my own digital camera, so I could take the pictures with that and send them to you Kubelmann, or whoever.

I'm leaving for Germany in three weeks, and volunteered to take the door with me, but seeing as how this is still in the planning stage, I don't see this happining now. Not a big deal to me, so I hope all goes well with it in the states.

Good luck to all that participate on this, assuming it gets off the ground.

We have a number of option to get the door off to Germany with you.

We need to have the sticker made.

Sal says, "This is NY I can get anything made..

Bucko has an extra door

Sal makes sticker sends it to Bucko

Bucko applies sticker to the door

I am more than willing to contribute $ for the cost of producing the sticker..

Just as I made to offer to Scott in an above message (never received a reply), I pledge support for the cost of producing the sticker.
Any others willing to pledge?
