Strut tower bar- could it be adapted for Type 4?

Make one. I had one on my old Scirocco 16V and it was a simple setup. I don't particularly care for the one in that link, as the modular design could be sloppy and not support the towers, not to men tion more chance of failure as the hardware ages.

The one I had was from Neuspeed, and if I was making one, I'd look to mimic their designs. Simple, but rigid. Any fabricator could whip one up pretty quick.

True, the attachment points might just act as pivots, not providing any real bracing...

Thats absoluetly correct. The design to mimic...at least in theory....is the model that is used on the rabbit. It uses two contact points on the tower and is basically a pair of tubular bars welded todether and forked at each end. That super-beetle bar is not triangulated. But...the flat parts would be great mounts.
I would take mounts like that..and weld a bar between them in the rear...and one in the front...parralel. Then make a welded box to link the two bars together and triangulate them. Use opposite thread unions in teh middle to pre-load teh bars slightly. You could even bolt this together....but the bolst must be strong and not be able to pivot.Ray
