412 vacuum routing diagram??

Hello all,
So I recently purchased 412Jen's car, the marathon blue 412 2dr, and it seems that there are a few people already familiar with the car in some way or another.
My request is to see if anyone has a vacuum hose diagram for this car, which is a '73 model, and was purchased in California. I don't have many books that cover the type-4's, and haven't been too lucky yet in finding a decent manual (I'd love to pick up a Bentley).
I haven't picked up the car yet, and likely won't have a chance to 'get into it' for at least another month yet, but I did notice that the vacuum port for the ignition retard on the dizzy was open. It's been on my mind since I saw the car on Feb 26th, and was curious where the other end of this hose attaches (ie: could this be a source of vacuum loss?).
Oh, one more thing: would this car have been EGR equipped, since it was originally sold in California? How does this affect/change things if these parts were 'lost' over the years?
Any help is appreciated.

Good thing to test the vacuum on the can adv and retard! Mine was a leaker! I think that hose could come from the bottom of the body of the throttle switch.... Ill have to check the books.. u can find aomw info out online too?

Hey Vonkr,
Yeah, I've been collecting books from eBay on type-4's, and even have couple of manuals now on Bosch Fuel Injection. I actually started picking them up before I bought the car. I figured they'd be great to add to my already large collection even if I missed out on buying Jen's car.
By the way, I love those 5.5 chromies on your car. They give the car a whole different look.....more agressive with the wider rims. I think I'll explore this option for the 412.

Thanx
Yeah, I agree, without these (or other than standard) rims the car looks a bit boring and old fashioned. I also tried other rims (with photoshop) but I think I'll keep this rims.....

Hey Travis, sorry been trying once again to get the 412 rebuilt again and to south florida for the show but got caught by losing too much time retesting everything when I did a assume on my frickiin points being still good and then lookin at my cell and seeing 253 change to 353 from the time change and me needing a six hour madane voyage to get there by 11!! Got to that point with the stuff almost there just not worth it to my car!! I didnt give myself enough time and having parts issues as always!
Recheck the parts physically not ot box! Mounted my ebay chromies to some midamerica metrics and had sear balance them by a bug owner rebuilder! Well she's running but needs another timing set and the valve rechecked along with the brakes bleed and some wiring put backs and measure the strut towers! SHe rides about 2 1/8 or 45mm. On the test rides she handled tight to the road and at 55 I could feel that 412 seat and handling again, nice! I cant wait to get it all setup right! I had some odd compression before start up like 125 left sides 95 rights! It's nice to have the interior outta my dining room too! I try to post a pics! bill
p.s. I know a Wallace Travis

Well, I wish I could help with the vacuum diagram, or with a quick look under the "hood" of one of my 412s, but all my car stuff is still in Missouri. I've got to get some moving reimbursement stuff straightened out before I can do anything other than just go to work and buy food...very frustrating...still got to finish those bushings for you guys!
Anyway, Bill, I'm glad you are working on your car again. I was thinking that maybe you might need some help (er, uh maybe I'd just be watching and learning?) but looking at the map, Gainesville is still about a 6 hour drive from Atlanta! I keep forgetting how big this damn country is. You think after all the road trips in a lifetime, this would actually penetrate my thick skull...Anyway, get some pics going for sure.

I can email some pics of the engine for the vacuum layout! It's funny how you kinda can start at what you might know and there is a diagram in the Cylmer of some of the air systems. Hey Uber, how's the transition! The front end seems closer; I have the idler bushing still to install but the wheels and tires on sale helped steering issues fast It might be nice to change the steering damper with something like that material you found! Not there yet but I can feel the 411/412 feel again! I havent done the steerin box either! Those bushings you made look sweet! The start up is pretty good with no pedal start in two to three turns of the engine. I have alot to get right! The body is far away!
And deck lid foam rot! bill
p.s. is the seat ride/height very road related?

Sorry, there's no picture or diagram in the books with the connections of the vacuum.....
But maybe a diagram of the air inlet / ignition will help. That diagram is now at home.....

Maybe I can also try to take a look and make a picture like ubercrap suggested (I could think of that myself while I picked up the car last saturday after his wintersleep

).

Sorry??? Man the 411/412 setting of timing at 3500 and strobing can be a handful but when it's a singin that rev!! Prrrrr..... and hold there! Then reconnect and re-set idle/mixture. You could notice the difference when the vac retard line went on! It is amazing how she does move for a 1.7L under break in! Need to chk valves! My CHS read 0.10 ohms 20kscale when hot and temp at the jug/head head 258? Think I need a resister add on.. Solved up some wiring issues up frt; need to rechk the tranny level. The car is already close to driving really sweet.... It is a funny seat setup......Next front end float bobble test at speed after I get the misc. set! bill

I found a picture, I hope it is sharp enough to see where the hose is connected.
Here are also a few possible books to buy:

Hey vokr and Bill,
Thanks for your responses on this thread. Thanks vonkr for the picture; I have saved that one to my VW folder of images. However, this picture only shows the vacuum advance line, not the vac-retard line. This is the one I was curious about. I still don't actually have the car in my possession yet, so I can't even check it for myself yet.
Yeah, it's that time of year again: getting the VW's out of winter storage. I brought my fastback out of it's cocoon on the weekend, and fired it up. Still puts a dumb grin on my face every spring. My wife just laughs at me; I guess I'm like a 5-year-old at his own birthday party.
Thanks for the eBay links too, vonkr. In regards to the VW parts catalogue, I recently purchased this on microfiche, also on eBay. I think I've also located a Haynes manual for these cars, I just have to double-check it.
Does anyone have a Bentley? Is it better than the Haynes? I've got a Bentley for my '73 Westfalia, and it's a pretty good manual.
Anyhow, I just need to know where the hose attaches along the intake system; I figure that because there's no hose attached to the distributor end, that there's a good chance that the other end is open/unplugged too......and thus, this could be this car's major vacuum issue. But who knows, it could be capped off for all I know.

Travis,
I'm affraid I don't understand what you mean with "vac-retard line", probably my bad english.....

I put another image, maybe this will help you. Otherwise you have to take a picture when you have the car.....
Still puts a dumb grin on my face every spring
Yes

I know what you mean

I only heard the name Bentley a few times but never saw a picture or hardcopy of it before. What I saw yesterday was a workshop manual on cd, see the link below, but the price is a bit to high. I even have a workshop manual (in dutch!) but it is incomplet, a few chapters are missing
