hi.i know there are svda distributors and the likes out there for those interested in eliminating points in their bugs...but i am all about mods,especially cheaper options for those on a budget!is there any other distributor assembly from another car model(after moding ofcourse)that could work on the bug if i wanted to do away with the troublesome points?
I know a few mechanics out there who use a different car model distributor assembly after machining to place in the bug to get rid of the points.i have asked them the secret/trick but they wont tell.i guess it makes busines sense.might anyone have an idea?
Info and Advice would be highly appreciated!

Once upon a time, I heard that the WBX entire ingition system was a drop in.
Also, I have seen , somewhere, a pictorial on machining a rabbit dizzy to bug spec in order to allow the entire ignition to be used.

I know that the WBX distrubuter fits, the WBX is basically a watercooled type 1. Not sure how you would get the rest of the ignition to work though with out an ECU to control it...I am using that distributer in mine, but have modified it to be used for my fuel injection setup.

The early Vanagon ignition system with the vac can/mechanical advance is stand alone:
uses a hall effect dist, drops in, and is only sends a tach signal to the EFI ala LJet.
You need the wiring, ignition module, and matching coil, the idle stabilizer gets bypassed.
I have that setup, works great.
The late WBX dist has no advance setup, trigger only... useful in its own way, using one with 3 wings cut off for a sync pulse on my MS setup.
I would be interested in the Mk1-2 Golf distributor mod, as they are more common that Vanagons.
The distributor/ig system is electrically and almost mechanically identical to a Vanagons...
... Except for the dist drive end, so I imagine the "mod" is duplicating the ACVW dist drive parts and dimensions at the bottom.
(Cut shaft and lower body to length/diameter, cross drill and put the shims/drive dog on)
I have heard of the same being done to other brand distributors. It's just a matter of making it fit/drive physically.
You could also use the Mk1-2 ignition module as a coil drive for a std ACVW dist with a Pertronix etc, the module sets the dwell and is almost bulletproof.
You would want to use the late low-Z coil but it's pretty flexible, I ran it with a low-Z Mallory coil for awhile, later triggered a Jacobs Omnipak with it.
Addendum to Newtons first law:
zero vehicles on jackstands, square gets a fresh 090 and 1911, cabby gets a blower.
EZ3.6 Vanagon after that.(mounted, needs everything finished) then Creamsicle.
