Using plasma cutters

Post by Tinnerdude1 »

If any of you out there use plasma or zip cutters there are a couple of things I would do. Use a dust mask when cutting, after all all that smoke is filled with vaporized metal. You breath it in and guess what? Your lungs are now where all that vaporized metal goes. If you want to see just what I mean try putting a dust mask on and cut a piece of metal and see what the mask looks like when you are done. Second, do not cut without a welding helmet on or at least use oxy-acyl. goggles. You can get flash burns from the arc. While I am just flapping my fingers I have another pet peeve. If you do any tig or mig welding USE a welding coat, not an undershirt. You will get burned and badly. You always see guys on TV welding in nothing but an undershirt, looks cool but I bet there arms are beet red when done. If you mig weld use ear plugs, that frying bacon sound will make you lose your hearing over time. These are just some of the things I have learned over the last 40 years of welding, both at home and at work. Protect yourself, after all there is only one of you.

My small 120V Mig isn't that loud. But my buddy's big TIG is really LOUD! So don't forget to use protection there.

I've gotten homemade sunburns from wearing a t shirt while welding - the UV that arc puts out is nasty. Most of the middle-aged welders I know have skin cancer on their arms, ending sharply where the sleeve starts to cover... Good advice.

back in high school, for prom... we sunscreened heavily, and welded all day with no shirts.... looked GOOD... from the front.. forgot about the backs though...

Well, obviously your welding instructor neglected to teach you to weld behind your back. Sheesh, what are they teaching kids these days? ;-)
