Removing paint with heat

Post by Leatherneck »

I have a rail so we are not talking body skin. What do you think about using heat/torch to remove paint? Just enough to cook the paint not turn the metal red.

The off-gassing with paint removers is bad enough, heating the paint is really bad to inhale.

Try some paint stripper from the auto body store is my advise. Also you can apply the stripper then cover with saran wrap to make it more effective.

So wearing a full face respirator ( not dust mask) would take care of the vapors. would the heat be bad for the metal?

The resperator couldn't hurt. Either of the two ways talked about are messy.

The problem I see is getting hot enough to burn the paint away. I know areas near where I am welding get hot enought to peel, lift, burn the paint. I still have to go back with a wire wheel an clean it. Try a small area first to see how good it works. You might find that a wire wheel will work just as good and leave a frame ready to paint.

I often use a wire wheel on a 4 1/2 " grinder.

That is the route I am taking. Can also get some of the rust spots while I am at it. 8)

Bought a knot wheel at Ace for 18 bucks, bought a Dewalt knot wheel at Lowes for 14 bucks, the dewalt wheel does a better job and is lasting longer. The fire thing, well even if you use that you still have to knock off the residue so nothing gained with that. Took 2 Ace and 1 dewalt wheel to strip the rail.
