Paint what what color
So going to be painting a rail, the rail will be one color and the removable body another color. Should I paint any parts of the rail the same as the body for contrast? Such items might be tranny, fan shroud, air filter housing, arms, etc? Ideas, suggestions? Thanks!

Re: Paint what what color
Leather, it depends on whether you want to be subtle and not stand out or be seen and noticed.
Seen and noticed, Hedrock's "arrest me red" is a good choice.
The very glowing lime green variation (more yellow and white) is popular with the younger set
Subtle, a nice glossy black or dark color or, if this is to be a ninja rail (not seen or not heard, flattened/suede black with a good muffler (no smiling either). A nice deep blue is always tasteful and if you like green there is always a metallic deep green to be enjoyed. Unusual colors would be in the browns such as a metallic root beer or a creamy-ish tan color w/brown accent could look nice.
The color I had picked out for my black buggy is a metallic black (yes Gertrude, there is a metallic black) which is a deep black laid over a metallic base coat (several choices of metallic material to give different glitter effects. This is not a Metalflake or Diamond Dust either), followed by a cinnamon coat covered with several coats of clear. The body is still black but the hi-lights (the light reflecting off the curve of the fenders or hood for example) have a deep red color to them.
Trim/accents: do you want to be able to find them at dusk to work on them, then contrasting colors... in good taste of course. A ninja rail would be black, a flat black or maybe a deep red color for some accent.
Take a picture of your rail with the body on and edit it to black and white lines then print it on paper. Get out your crayons and have at it.

I _always_ thought rails looked way, way better if everything was the same color.
Hopefully you can get anything not chromed, rubber, glass or polished, the same color.
This is the one instance where i'd be inclined to paint the case to match.
My $.02. FWIW...

Based on what I have heard, he is going for checker board pattern this time.

Plaid would be SO much cooler - go for a different plaid on the roll cage, as well!

With the right place, you could actually have the frame dipped in water transfer graphics and get the plaid you want too..... OK maybe not,... but I have seen Bicycles done with WTG that looked like a Bandana..... Very cool stuff. I have also seen some wood grain done on steel square tubing that you would swear by looking at it, that it was indeed beautifully finished walnut.... There is no limit to what can be done,.... except one's pocket book.Stray Catalyst wrote:Plaid would be SO much cooler - go for a different plaid on the roll cage, as well!

I have a better idea. If you are old enough you might remember the psydelic paint for shoes and stuff. Came on tv during all the stupid cartoons we watched. The different color paints would float on top the water in a swirll. Dip the shoes in and presto cool psycho shoes that anybody coul make.
Now all you need in a crane, a neighbor's pool and some oil based paint!!!!!!!!!!!!

Re: Paint what what color
I've seen faux paint done in plaid - I've even seen paisley, though it looked like a lot of work. I've only seen it with brushes, but the same technique would work with a paint gun or air brush.

Paisley involved a scrapbook punch in the frilly comma looking paisley shape. It'll punch through masking tape, as well, so it's tedious instead of impossible. I wouldn't want to do that sort of pattern on any large panels, or any mistake would be obvious. On a roll cage, though, it might be worth the work.

This can also be achieved with Dye Sublimation printing on Powder Coat... Here's an example I picked up off the web... not my work.

A friend did his crotch-rocket in shelf paper.
The kind with the wood grain.
You could hardly tell the thing wasn't actually wood.
Total double-take...

Not to confuse or anything.... I didn't mean that Bicycle frame as My work.... Stole the pic just as an example of things that can be done..... I shall go back and correct it too, giving credit to "other" people.Leatherneck wrote:Would love to do the powder coat, man that would be sweet. $orry to say it won't happen though.
