Oil cooler mount mount pics
Can someone post some pics of how the oil cooler is mounted to the case? What's the mount look like? Are they similar coolers to a Type 1?

Re: Oil cooler mount mount pics
Late (large-passage) Type III coolers are similar to doghouse Type I, but with the addition of a boss for the oil pressure switch. Both use the 021 117 151A seals: http://images.imcparts.net/webapp/wcs/s ... 17151A.jpg
If the case and cooler are both small-passage, the seals used are unique to Type III (although they are provided in the 111 198 007AF gasket set). 311 117 151 are also "flying-saucer" shaped, but they're thicker...with these seals only, spacers are fitted between the case and cooler. I cannot find a good picture of these ones, but they're over ¼" thick, and as mentioned come in the overhaul gasket set. There is also a 311 117 151A, which is thinner (same thickness as the 021 117 151A) but fits the small-passage cooler & case...it is often represented as being a "1970" part, perhaps because it was introduced that year for service replacement of the 311 117 151 (with the spacers omitted), but all `70 cases were large-passage and do not take this seal:

When using a large-passage cooler on a small-passage case, or vise-versa, adapter seals are needed. These (usually green) seals come two to a kit, P/N 111 198 029. No spacers are used for either configuration, the spacers provided in the kit are used only when adapting a small-passage Type I cooler to a large-passage case.

Type III cases have a long 6mm cooler stud and use two long m6x1.0 bolts inserted from the bottom up (best done before the LH cylinders are installed). There's a sheetmetal piece (#25 in this diagram) which slips over the case "ears" before inserting the bolts, IIRC it only fits with the small-passage/thick-seal spacers in place; it's not necessary regardless:

Universal cases come with m8x1.25 threads and 8mm "ear-holes" for the cooler hardware. The hardware kit made for these cases includes a long step-stud and spacer sleeves which are used to reduce the holes' I.D. down for the 6mm bolts.
Ancient Type III (pre`62) used the same "wedding band" cooler seals as small-passage Type I, 111 117 151.

Re: Oil cooler mount mount pics
Is there a 90 degree mount like in a T1 application or does it just bolt horizontal to the case and not adapter?

Errr, yes. Honest, if there was an adapter I would've mentioned it in the above dissertation.panel wrote:...does it just bolt horizontal to the case and not adapter?
The cooler mounts horizontally, out over the LH cylinders.
