Our Type 1 1974 standard Sunbug

Post by dubhead74 »

After being purchased new in Florida and 5 owners this 1974 type 1 standard sunbug ended up in our driveway an hour and a half after being posted on CL.
The last owners had just painted the whole car purple(his first automotive paint job) and got bored trying to get his feet wet working on his first aircooled motor. Like many bugs this one apparently suffered many years of neglect and abuse.
The paint job was ok for a newbie but he painted everything purple except for the wheels and windows. So I added some flat black accent to help hide some flaws in the paint.
There isn’t much of an interior. Owner number 4 stripped the inside except the dash wore out front seats before just owner 5 bought it.
The cars nickname is “badazz” and was crowned that when every time we went to our local gas stations someone always said “that’s one badass bug” so we changed the ss’ to zz’ and it stuck.
After months of mods and replacing parts here is a list of items changed or added to our bug:
Pushrods Tubes
.009 dis
26mm oil pump
Fuel pump
Valve covers
Header with jtubes and exhaust
Progressive carb
2 core oil core with remote filter
Mini oil sump
Sand seal pulley
Complete motor tear and clean(4th owner had just replaced block and heads)
2 inch drop spindles
2.5 inch drop spring plates
Ghia front brakes
Front and rear pads and shoes
Front and rear shocks
185/60r15 front tires
205/75r 15 rear tire
Bus shifter
Nissan Altima front seats mounted low
Pan patch repair until new ones can be purchased along with the wire welder
Paint work done on side, front, roof and rear
All the work was done in our carpot by me and my wife.

I still need to fabricate the rear apron to be removable as well a bunch of other stuff. But that’s the fun of owning this bug as well the nine other ones we have owned over the last 20 years of marriage. Our badazz bug might not be badazz to you or your taste in direction with a build but my wife loves it and we both enjoy when we go out for a drive and that’s all that matters’ hope you enjoyed this posting and thank you for taking the time to check out our type 1
