I found all of the parts to do the 914 transaxle for a beetle on ebay for cheap and I did not consider whether a 4speed shifter was different than a 5speed 914 shifter. The one I ended up with has a semi circle cut out where 5th should be so I imagine it is for a 5 speed but can only guess. Also I looked up the shifter head bushings and the 911 and the 914 take the same part number. Is the side/tail mount 914 the same as a 911 shifter?

Any info on this will be appreciated!
The tail shift 914 shifter IS the same shifter as the 911 5-speed shifter in every respect. The side shift 914 shifter will get you all the gears reversed if you used it because it twists the shift shaft the same direction as the knob moves (which is the opposite of how it should move on a 911 5-speed. Hope that doesn't confuse you too much. . .
I got everything from the shifter nob to the internal shifter rod ,including the shifter rod for $245 before shipping which will help make up for some other money I threw away some other time. The coupler does need to be rebuilt though. 914 transaxles are somewhat easy to find in my locale so that is another aspect going for the 914/901 conversion. Thanks for the shifter info. I could not find a damn thing on the web whether a 911 shifter is the same as a 914 nose shift but the head bushings are the same so I took a chance. I thought that 914s came with a 4speed and a 5speed but that must have been for a 911.
It's a nice article Steve. I can weld and stuff but I wanted to point out a few things about the Bugatspeed kit. It looks like their nose cone is a copy of a 911 so the cutout to the tunnel still has to be done because their shift linkage rod is as low as the 911 cone.
I just got my bug@5speed setup, holy niceness! Ya their nose cone is the same except it does not have the bubble up area on the front for the speedo gear. from my understanding you DO Not notch the torsion housing since the tranny can now mount (IIRC 20mm) more forward. The hockey stick goes under the torsion housing instead of over it like a stock box.
I'm thinking midmount T1 style and DIY cable shifter on weld-in framehorns, using a sideshifter 914 trans.
...although i have a spare tailshifter as well, may be easier.
I'll just cut off the 914 mount "ears".
\Damn burn ban is a drag, i have two welders I can't use.
Addendum to Newtons first law:
zero vehicles on jackstands, square gets a fresh 090 and 1911, cabby gets a blower.
EZ3.6 Vanagon after that.(mounted, needs everything finished) then Creamsicle.

The 912s (65-69) came with either a 4-speed or 5-speed. Funny thing is that 1st & 4th/5th are the same in either box. the difference is the middle gears and their spacing.
