Any tips on replacing the 2 rubber master cylinder grommets?

For road racing, autocrossing, or just taking that curve in style. Oh yea, and stopping!

Any tips on replacing the 2 rubber master cylinder grommets?

Post by Jim Ed »

I have a 1973 (non Super) Beetle with a dual circuit master cylinder.
I want to replace the two rubber grommets on top of it.
Would it be best to remove the master cylinder and turn it upside down to replace those grommets so any crumbs from the old grommets will not fall into the master cylinder ?
I was not planning on removing the m.c. to replace the grommets.
I was going to apply a little brake fluid to the 2 grommets.
Then carefully twist the plastic tubes and hope the grommets come out in one piece.
Then apply a little brake fluid to each new grommet, insert the plastic tube, and carefully twist it into place.
Any help is appreciated!
TIA!

...Make sure you have replacement plastic barb thingies as well.

The best way to do what you are proposing involves having a complete spare MC and a quart of brake fluid on hand.

If you have it it will all go well, if you don't you will need to replace the master cylinder...

It's derived from Murphys Law.
Addendum to Newtons first law:
zero vehicles on jackstands, square gets a fresh 090 and 1911, cabby gets a blower.
EZ3.6 Vanagon after that.(mounted, needs everything finished) then Creamsicle.

The FTE master cylinder I have in it now was installed in 2004 and has only a little over 5000 miles on it.
The two rubber grommets I described have little cracks on the outside of them but, they are not leaking. The m.c. works well.
But I went ahead and ordered a Brazilian Vargas master cylinder from CB Performance and it is on the way.
I have used Brazilian master cylinders before. I plan to install it and put the other m.c. on the shelf.
