Stock vs Screen Type Air Filter

Post by Goodwrench »

Question for those in the know. What are the pros and cons of a screen type air cleaner as opposed to a stock oil bath air cleaner? Appreciate the help and knowledge.

Stock vs Screen Type Air Filter

The oil bath isn't the most effective aircleaner, but most stock aircleaners do offer thermostatically-controlled intake air which can be important in preventing hesitation on acceleration, particularly on a dualport. Another often-overlooked feature of the stock setup is that it provides a sheltered volume for the fuel-standoff fog that exists above the carburetor at higher speeds. If you choose to run an aftermarket air filter it should be mounted atop an inlet tube at least 3" tall (no room for that in a `Ghia, so it needs to be installed at the end of the stock intake elbow and have a support fabricated for it).
