74 914
Hello to all. I am an older dog trying to learn new tricks. I am new to this type of thing, but not new to automotive work. I purchased a 1974 Porsche 914 for 400 dollars and have reduced the problem of not starting to a fuel delivery issue. I removed and cleaned out the gas tank and am in the process of replacing the lines to the fuel pump. I have purchased a product to do away with the points system and a few other things. My biggest question is this: Can this type of vehicle be disassembled so that each panel, etc. can be cleaned prepped and painted? And my second question is, if I wanted to boost the stock power just a little what is the easiest and most cost effective avenue. I appreciate all responses and thank you for letting me be a part of your group.

Sounds like a good buy if its in reasonable condition. Have a look around the area under the battery aka "the hellhole" and remove the bottom panels along the longitudal beams between the wheels and remove all the dirt and stuff that's collected there over the years. To your questions. No, not unless you are prepared to drill out all the spotwelds and then put the chassis back together again. The only removable panels are the front and rear trunks, the doors and the bottom panels. Everything else in welded in place.
Boosting power, well a fully functioning stock injection with all the vacuum hoses and things working properly will be the cheapest. After that its just a matter of how much you are willing to spend. There really arent much in the way of easy power. Keep the stock engine and bore and stroke it, or swap in another engine, smallblock V8's and Subary flat 4's and 6's have all been done...

Thank you for your reply and I will do what you have suggested. So, the stock motor in proper working condition is sporty in itself and really doesn't need much? I am not a speed demon or anything, I just want to be able for the car to get out of it's own way. As far as the Subaru swaps, do you know where can I find detailed information on this process? Thank you again for your assistance.

Rusty Nail,
Welcome to STF!
Start reading in the Conversion Perversion forum. You're likely to be reading for awhile. After that, check the Type4um for many different T4 builds and conversions. A couple hours reading will get you way down the road on knowing what the possibilities are.
