my van wont start in the cold. I put a heater under it for an few hours and it will start right up. This isn't a problem when i am at home and have a heater handy but i plan to go on a ski trip and wont have access to electricity for a heater.
any suggestions to help get my van started in the cold would be sweet.
thanks,
Brian of Halifax

Your car should start in any situation in which others will. This is not VW specific.
Use a winter weight oil such as 5-30 or year round 10-40. Be sure the battery has a deep charge in it and all connections are good enough to insure good current conduction, including the ground strap at the front of the transaxle. Sometimes the starter on an old van does`nt receive proper voltage and must have a solenoid installed.
Next time crawl under and jump accross the starter with a screwdriver(do`nt have to tell you to be sure car is to be in neutral with parking brake set).If it cranks over then install the solenoid. You can use the search mode here to find out how if needed. Good Luck. Bob Ingman

You must have ESP, because I couldnt figure out when he said it wouldnt start was
1. does it turn over?
2. Have you adjusted the choke when cold?
3. Hoses and such been checked over?
might be able to help out if we knew what exactly was going on, thick oil in cold weather makes for hard turn over and hard starting, I would recommend a multiweight
good luck

No ESP here. I was going on the fact that he warmed the engine not the air going into it.
Warming the engine would have no effect on the choke just allows the engine to turn over easier. As anyyone with duals will tell you an engine will cold start without chokes but it just runs like crap til it`s warmed up.Low voltage is sometimes less noticable when the engine is warm and cranks easier but becomes apparent in adverse conditions.Batteries are also very temp sensitive and tend to flow more current when warmed.
Bottom line is you`re right though. That was not a lot of info . I just wanted to get the ball rolling with the most common sinerios.
Good Luck. Bob

sorry about the lack of info thanks for the help. you guys have solved all my problems before without posting here is some more info:
have a 5w30 oil
battery has a lot of juice, it will crank and just not turn over.
have adjusted the choke but no luck.
it acts like it is not getting fuel but if i add fuel right to the carbs still no go.
any suggestions?

when you say " battery has a lot of juice, it will crank and just not turn over"
do you mean that it will not spin or not run?
If the motor spins over and your ignition system is OK ---good dwell and all
Try pumping the gas 5 times and holding the pedal to the floor Then crank --if it starts don't rev it until it builds up oil pressure
good luck

And the plot thickens with a good battery and no run?
well a engine needs, gas, spark and air, plus needs to turn over at a resonable rate.
I have had points close when they got hot not cold,
try going over the basics, points, plugs valves, etc.
Bob I was kidding with the ESP comment

the cold weather seems to be over here on the east coast now and my van is starting just fine. The valve that controls air into the carbs was siezed closed, i got it free added some carb cleaner(hope that was the only prob). she seems to be working fine now thanks for your help.
