Unknown GAS Heater - Is it worth $250.00

Post by TooBer »

Hello all, I have a 1974 bus I would like to add a gas heater too. A guy near me has this one for sale for $250.00. I am wondering if it is worth it. I have e-mailed him about the model #. He say?s that only what is in the image is what comes with it... Is it complete and/or what am I missing. I have viewed the info on www.type2.com but it is hard to tell from the B/W images.

Thank you for your time,

T

I don't see the fuel pump and regulator in the picture. It may be under the cover that is bolted onto the case. I don't think 250 is that steep (mabey a little) for a complete running system. Eventually it will need to be restored. I have just begun the a restoration of my own. It mainly involves cleaning parts and making your own pressure diaphrams out of special gas resistant rubber that you can buy in sheets from any carb shop. Hope this helps, I am in no way an expert, but I bet you could find one for a bit cheaper at a swap meet. Also make sure it is a 12 volt. I have seen 6 volt heater out there,

For what it's worth I also just bought a heater for my bus. I had listed a want add at type2.com and with 2-3 days had a couple offers. The guy who sold me mine only asked 150.00 and it included all the parts that are in your pic. That is a pretty complete setup and from what I have seen not too easy to find, but it might be worth it to try to get the price down a bit. Has the heater been tested and checked to be running. If someone has recently went through it and tested/adjusted it then 250.00 to me is more reasonable, but if the actual working condition is unknown then I would say that might be a little high. I'm not an expert so take it for what its worth...

I would look on eBay and on VW PLanet. I'm constntly scouring the internet for parts. I've seen gas heaters on both those sites (complete/in box, sometime w/ the manual) for around that same price.

Not to mention if you ask him the model number & all he tells you is, "you get what you see in the picture", my guess is he doesn't know much about the thing either.
http://www.ebay.com <~~~search under: VW bus or VW gas heater.
http://www.thesamba.com <~~~ lots of heaters, and you can search by: state, area, area code, etc.

just my 2 cents

I have that same setup in my '72 westy. The gas pump is mounted seperately, & it is not in the picture. Not sure about cost of a replacement.

There is also another piece of ductwork that is missing. What you have there will take you from the engine room to the inside of the van. The missing piece changes the shape of the ducting from rectangular to round. (might just be a westy piece)

I would offer $150. Especially for an unknown one that may or may not work.

I have an Eberspacher BN4 complete. Just needs a glow plug. Everything else works fine. I'll let you have it for $125 plus shipping costs.
Email me to let me know if you're interested. I'll take pics tonight.
