auto tranny spits fluid out fill tube - why?

Post by momswestfalia »

About two months ago I stopped at a stop sign and it felt like a car tapped me from behind (none did). The transmission made this wild slam into a gear (it had never done that). I drove for about a half mile and noticed white smoke out the back end. I thought the bus was dead but instead this was the first instance of fluid flying out the fill tube. I thought that something must be plugging up in the transmission. I drained it, cleaned the filter, put in new fluid and noticed nothing visible. Of course there is not much to see. The problem has continued and just when I think that I have it solved it started spewing fluid again. I now have a plastice bag over the fill tube that I check once a day and usually it has half a cup of fluid.
Does this sound familiar to anyone? I don't want to kill the transmission but I can figure what to do next.
Thanks for any help!!!

Thing to check is that the two vents on top of the transmission/transaxle are clean to allow the transmission to breathe and not cause internal pressures that can force fluids out the filler tube. You can see these vents from the engine bay. If these are OK them your problems are more likely in the transmission interior. Good luck.
