3 speed auto tranny , late 70's vintage issues

Post by jconthemountain »

My wife has a trike with a vw beetle engine (79) and a vw 3 speed auto tranny, which came out of a late 70's vw van....there is NO ONE we can find in lower southeastern Wyoming who can diagnose and/or repair the transmission. One of the guys I spoke to in Salt Lake City referred me to your forum..said the knowledge and helpfulness was almost endless.

She was driving the trike , stopped at a red light, the transmission disengaged and will not reengage....forward or reverse....prior to stopping, made no noise, had no slippage, gave no indication of an issue at all...I did have one transmission fellow say it did not appear to be getting any hydraulic pressure, but not sure how he determined that or even if he had a clue what to check, to be honest....had the engine rebuilt a few years back by a fellow in Kallispell, Mt, he said the transmission were practically "bullet proof", and if it was an internal issue that had just worn out, it should have had symptoms prior to shutting down...but, he is 15 hours from here.

Have had a couple say the best route is just to locate another transmission and just replace it rather than attempt a repair, but hesitant until I hear from a few folks who may have an idea of what the possibilities are....

Any input, or referrals in the Wyoming/Salt Lake city area would be welcome....

First thing would be to check if it's a 003 or a 010, if it's a 003 there's tons of information about it in the Type 3 subforum in thesamba, if it's a 010 you can start here:

I've never messed with a 010, but if it's anything like the 003 it's not rocket science

First thing to check is the fuse for the shifter. You didn't mention taking a look at it.
