Car titles

Post by Ol'fogasaurus »

I had an interesting day today and got some information that might be worth looking into in the state you live in.

I mentioned that we bought a new truck trading in the old one I had (I’ll miss it for a long time). In the state of WA when you sell or get rid of a car you need to send in a notice to the Department of Licensing that the vehicle is not yours anymore (now days the form is attached to the title). While doing this (we chose not to do it on line or by mail but by taking it to a place where you get the new yearly plates or tabs) the lady doing the report to the state made a statement that your title is for the car but the license plates are for you and they (the plates) should be pulled when you sell or trade the vehicle. She was pretty adamant about it as she worked at a vehicle dealership so we went down to the dealership and found out that: in the state we live in her statement is true but only true if you have “vanity” or certain other license plates. The law here was changed about 2 years ago so the dealers are now required to pull the plates immediately and scrap them but not so individual so if you sell to a private party that seems to be a different deal as until they get the title and plates changed into their name any tickets or other problems go to the “plate’s owner” which is you. Something you should check with your state to see how this stands based on what I found out.

For what it is worth.
