When did VW put the 113 splined 3rd and 4th?

Post by ngobet »

Hi everyone,

can anyone tell me in which gearbox did VW switch to the splined 113 style 3rd and 4th gears? with coarse teeth of course
Must be pretty late, I opened a few 65-ish gearbox and found only keyed gears. And then in 72-73 they switched to 002 gears.

I need to find some to replace fine teeth 002 gears in a gearbox.

Thank you

I don't understand the splined 113 gears, but bus boxes 71-75 will have course tooth 002 gears. Technically I think there are more vehicles that did later as well, but the most common to find will be bus boxes.

There's only one kind of 113 type 3rd gear. There isn't a "splined" or "keyed" version, they're the same.

4th gear changed from keyed to splined for the gear on the pinion shaft in about 1969 At the same time, fine tooth gears were introduced.

The Bus trans switched to 002 type gears for 72. Beetle got them for 73. Bus always had coarse tooth gears, Beetle always had fine tooth gears after about 1970.

If you want to use 002 type coarse tooth gears, look for ones from a 72-75 trans. Ratios aren't always the same. 72-74 had taller 0.82 for top gear, but in 75, you got a 0.89.

In a previous gearbox, I had 3rd and 4th splined 4th gear, 113 type with coarse teeth. The gearbox was built, but they didn't look aftermarket.
Don't know in which gearbox I could find the same
