Hi gents- the South Wind heaters that I sell are strictly for front engined cars from the 1920s to the 1930s. if you are looking for Volkswagen gas heaters try warmerwagen@hotmail.com. VW gas heaters are designed to run independent of the engine. The ones you have seen in the Bramhall website can only run with the engine running. MAYBE you could make them work in a VW but I can't see how. Look on Ebay for Volkswagen South Winds and Eberspacher heaters. Hope this helps- but if you need a heater for a 1937 Terraplane, give me a call. cheers, Larry

I believe the Southwind heaters mounted in the trunk of the VW.They hooked into the duct work for the defrosters and had an outlet for the rest of the car. There is a guy on the samba.com that has heaters for sale.Look in the classifieds. His mount in the engine area.Southwind and Stewart Warner are the same heater. That southwind guy doesnt know his history to well the south wind heater is made by stewart warner which also makes aviation gages. They made both 6v and 12v heaters, my last bus had a southwind, it didnt have any duct work just one rotating vent, the owner mounted it behind the passenger side bulk head and aimed the vent toward the front of the bus, it looks like a 12 x 6 rectangular box, it cranks the heat, volkswagen used to install these in the 60's and 70's but there werent as many as the eberspacher and it didnt have a timer just a 3 way toggle and warning light in the dash, try to stick with a BN-4 or BA-6 as there is more parts and nobody has part or info on the southwinds I couldnt find much on the one I had, good luck

the main reason i was asking about these is because i got the bid on 2 southwinds
one like the one the guy sells but the other one is like the bn4 or whatever that actually came in a few bugs
i got them for 75 bucks so its worth a gamble i guess
well see when they come in

There was a guy on the buslist that rebuilt Southwind heaters. Rick Taylor. I think he made a video on rebuilding them. He is in the midwest, maybe check with the Buskatiers.
Also for parts check http://pages.prodigy.net/busbarn/southwind.html
THis may be his page, not sure.

I've flown Beechcraft Baron's (small twin engine airplane) that had those heaters. They sounded kinda dangerous at first but they work pretty well.
