Old newbie (well sort of) from Raleigh, North Carolina

Post by jduffman1319 »

I'm not so much a newbie as I am a returning user from many, many moons ago...

I have a Cal Look '67 beetle that has been sitting in my garage, incomplete for years. It started off as a surface rust covered project that went through a pan off restoration. The pan and de-chromed body were reunited, painted and some interior work done like a new headliner installed, gauges in the dash, etc. but not much else. Like I said, she's been sitting in my garage covered for years in that state of incompleteness.

I have probably 85-90% of all the parts I'll need for her 2332 engine, a new Scat white interior kit and additional parts to finish her off and get her on the road. I currently have the engine case (machined for 94s and full flow) attached to an engine mount on my workbench.

I've rebuilt a stock VW engine in my past so I understand all the parts, how they work, how they go together, etc.. What I lack is experience in assembling a high-performance engine and all the little details that go along with it. Things like what compression ratio options, what rods and rod length should I be using and still fit the engine in the car, optimum clutch selection for a street car, machine shop options for blueprinting/balancing parts, assembly tips, and so on.

I've done a ton of reading STF and Samba posts the last couple weeks and I'm getting overwhelmed. I guess what I'm looking for is a local mentor to help guide me along the process. I want to do all the work. I just want to make sure that I have someone experienced looking over my shoulder every so often inspecting parts, providing advice and basically making sure I'm doing everything right. I also have some extra engine parts (case, MOFOCO 041 heads, etc.) that could be used as potential barter material.

Does that sound possible or am I totally off my rocker?

Thanks!

Jim
