So finally after 2 years (maybe 4) of downtime finally getting back to my type 4 engine build. I still have the original 2.0 bus heads that are stock rebuilt but also during this time I had of 2.0 Porsche heads fall into my parts pile for a good price. This motor is going to be used in a type 11 look beetle
Now I was optioning what way to go. The short block has been put together but the top end is still under debate.
Engine as it sits
Bus 2.0 case
71mm crank
AAperformance 5.158 hbeam rods
Cb 2202 cam (I know not good but bought 2 years ago for cheap)
Cb type 4 lifters
Also have a vintage speed type 4 to beetle I am using
Here are the options I have. My budget for heads is 800-1200$
1 use bus heads as they sit
2 have 42x36 valves put in bus head
3 send the 039101371A heads to emw for a rebuild stock
4 same as above but go with 44x36 or 44x38 valves.
Depending on what heads I use I’ll get with kB flats or aa flats with there 3cc pocket.

Re: Type 4 heads second opinion
I would have EMW throat out the seats on the stock bus heads and fit slightly larger valves . made be shorten the exhaust guide and boss a little ,like the 914 heads and leave the intake port alone . Going to bigger valves in the 914 heads will be a mistake with the small cam and rebuilding the 914s to stock 42/36 valves will cost more and have little to no benefit and may loose you some low end torque .
No matter where you go , there you are !

The 039 914 2.0 heads are thé thing to have on your build
I think I see a few very small hairline cracks on the exhaust sides of the spark plug holes of the 039's, but rebuild with regular stainless steel 8mm (also exhaust, which is now 9mm shaft) 42x36 valves, they will perform best by far.
The 914 2.0 do work extremely well with 96mm bore, just FYI
