What, Vegas is closed ???

Only available for T1s?

If they are quality pieces, they won't get called names like "knockoff" (re: the ones perviously discussed..)

I'm gonna WAG 98.4mm matches some shelf std piston. (or shelf oversize)

3.720 in?

zero vehicles on jackstands, square gets a fresh 090 and 1911, cabby gets a blower.
EZ3.6 Vanagon after that.(mounted, needs everything finished) then Creamsicle.

It takes money to go to vegas and there are times when hobbies have to be set aside.

Those cyl's by them selves were the only ones I found pictures of. You can see them on the Type lV motors.

98.4mm-3.874" both the SBC 283 & 307 have 3.875"-98.425mm, they probally or than likely use custom pistons anyways.

OK, I'm coming up dry as to who make's 'em, have hit all the ACVW-bases aircraft engine mfrs based in the US.
They LOOK similar to the German Limbaughs,(sp?) but they were far more costly than Nickies.

Maybe a LSx size, they come in Nickasil plated versions with bore size around there and proven ring packs...

I'm having Bad Ideas as to what to do with a spare wasser block I have laying about that has some minor deck damage that renders it ~useless (some moron spun the crank w/no jugs and dug the piston skirts into the oring cyl base sealing surface)
I assume the SCAT heads can be had drilled for 4" stud pattern  ;-)

Greatplainsas.com sells a T4 kit with 71 stroke 103 bore (2400cc)
Hi Busguy71,
I am looking for a long time regarding type4 aircraft conversion, guess collected every thing available on the web :-)
IMHO, if you are ok with 80hp direct drive (means small propeller) for take off than go with ether Aerovee, GP or Revmaster type1 conversion. If you want more than this and additionally big propeller with VW engine than there is no alternative to redrive. My plane is a high wing classical parasol so, I need slow turning big propeller thus, my final choice is for 2056 combo, 36x42 valves, 270 Duration X .425 Lift camshaft with solid lifters, easy rebuild almost stock engine. This configuration I hope to be fine for 100hp at 4700, at list these numbers are listed here in the forum by various persons with similar rebuild. For redrive unit will be used planetary gears as core (Ross redrive idea) with 1:1,47 reduction, although 1.6 or 1.7 would be better but I could not locate off the shelf gears with this ratio.

These guy's love planes like others love cars. They love to help newbies. I'll give youu a for instance. The reduction units you see are to reduce rpm to the prop and are for high reving engines. ie those above 3500rpm or so. You can use that type 4 but you'll need to get some custom heads w/ twin plugs per cylinder, Light Speed probably has a suitable ignition system (mag - it can't depend upon the battery for spark in any manner) that would work on that engine. Your prop will be wood (which comes with it's own set of problems) or one of the new carbon fiber, variable pitch (even reverse!) styles. Why? There ain't enough mass in that type 4 crank. There big but not that big. Comparable A/C engines dwarf type 4 cranks. This is in part due to the mass of A/C metal props. If not, the harmonics would run wild thru that engine and self destruct in short order. Or maybe the prop would destruct first. That wildly out of balance nightmare will usually throw the engine off the plane anyway. And the plane always corkscrews into the ground after that. Have fun, I spent 20 years in it.
Hello,
im retired vw/audi mechanic, sold most everything(shop, tools equipment) to buy a house in a nice neighborhood w/good schools.
Now working on the "bucket list", started messing around with old air-cooled vdubs engines 1200, 1600 and now building type 4 2.0.
Was thinking of building from scratch Leonard's legal eagle 1/2 engine but now waning to tube and fabric build more like old Taylorcraft BC-12 or
J3 cub etc.
68Ghia is right these engine not run long @4K rpm. balance/harmonics one thing but heat kills engine quickly too, the Conti A65 A/c engine has oil sump that holds three times the oil of vw T4. what the two engines have in common is low end torque
climb rpm 3000 for 3 mins, cruise rpm 2550-2750 until CHT reach 395

right now looking into converting Type 4 VW engine to Audi AEB hardware and re-pinned ECM, Engines are twenty years apart but very similar, trying to match output of Conti A65. Considering Turbo/intercooler also.

cylinder head temperatures for sustained power can be controlled with piston squirters , autocraft type spray bars on the heads just need bigger oil coolers and finally water injection . I have a 103x71 in a heavy split camper , with water injection I can drive it at full power at 3400rpm up a long incline without the CHT's rising at all . Water injection was developed for aircraft in WW2

"no matter where you go... that quote from beyond thunderdome right?
i was planning flywheel drive w/this T4 build, now finding that 15lb flywheel needs to stay with redrive unit on pulley side ohmy 40lbs more weight!
i have many engines but no plane.
my latest look is french design 'Morin M85, buying the welder this weekend HF tig max 662 start welding a test/run stand
thx to Rump my Chromoly4130 is 40% higher than last year.

Wait, I'm going to ask a newb question, but... you're making these fly with a VW Beetle engine?? I wanted to ask "is that even possible", but it looks like it is. Are these full-blown planes or ultralights?

I worked for an engineer who was building a EAA airplane (aka a "home built" airplane) many years ago. I am not sure what he was using for an engine but I heard about the development of the ACVW for EAA airplanes about the same time. This would be prior to the middle of 1975.

The rules for FAA and EAA (Experimental Aircraft Assn) are somewhat similar but the FAA is more strict by a long ways.

Oh, okay, thanks, I didn't know what the rules for civil aviation were on your side of the ocean, that's fascinating.
