Ko3 air cooled application
hey guys I've basically had a nice ko3 turbo fall into my lap and I know this isn't bug related but I plan on running it on a aircooled harley. Ive seen a couple things here and there of guys running these and was curious about one thing. The ko3 is intended to be water cooled. Is running the ko3 without water cooling and strictly hooking up the oil feed and return all i need to do? Can't hardly find any information on this anywhere on the net. Figured if anybody would know about a aircooled app it would be here. Thanks in advance for any info you may have

Yep. That's all you need to do. No need for the water.

Anything to watch for heat wise? Turbo will be hanging out in the open so it should stay cooler than in its stock application. Could care less about hurting the turbo as there a dime a dozen, but don't feel like sending any pieces through my top end haha. I have the option to run an oil cooler if it's deemed necessary. But would rather not if I dont have to as there is not alot of room as it is.

The water jacket was always mainly intended to soften the shut-off. If you drive slow or idle a while before shut down the engine, you should be ok at all times. Turbo's are not 'watercooled' to run in normal (=WOT) operation Its just for shut-down.

Alrighty. Thanks man. Im new to the turbo game and am jumping in head first haha. Learning as I go. Thanks for your help. And ill keep in mind to let it idle down

Nothing to worry about heat wise. I had mine tucked in there pretty tight before with no troubles.

For what its worth, I've been running a TD04 (stock WRX trubo) for almost 2 years without the water lines hooked up without any issues. The purpose of water cooling the turbo is prevent oil coking on a stock setup. Either use a turbo timer or allow turbo to cool down before shutdown.

As mentioned, no need for water.
Regarding the oil feed and return, I can dig up the part numbers I used for the banjo fitting (feed) and drain plate (return) if you need. I ordered all that stuff from Summit.

Ever since I put a turbo on my beetle I've been staring at my little buell blast wondering if I could subject that little engine to force feeding...
But I think a turbo would die from the surging in a single cylinder application. Anyway, have fun! Male sure you have some form of programmable ignition system though.
