irs kits

after looking around at some web sites it seems that some kits only consist of the weld on pivots and new spring plates is this true? after looking at a few manuals i had it seems this would be possible with a little work but probably end up costingmore then some of the kits has anyone tried it before? Is it basically the same process as converting a swing axle bug?
