Venting-
Well, my hopes of rebuilding this engine anytime soon are pretty low at this point. For one thing, my expenses have exponentially increased to the point where I've had to use a lot of my VW kitty to pay bills due to the fact that we are in a recession and a few weeks ago that is one thing I swore I wouldn't do. Also, I have contacted several people who were highly suggested to me that can do VW engine work and every single one of them has been a dud. Either they had inadequacies or I would try to set something up with them after making contact to get the ball rolling and they'd just ghost me which doesn't tell me they need or want my business. Or they just didn't answer. Why would I entrust this thing that I love to some dickhead who doesn't seem to care what I think?
It's ridiculous but sometimes I wonder if maybe they recognize my project from the forums and don't like me for whatever reason and decide to ignore me. lol Isn't that funny? But what else am I supposed to think when you contact a person and everything seems ok at first, then you explain what you need and some details about your project and ask them what they'd like to do next and a week goes by and they don't respond? I realize it may be the time of year they are just crazy busy and they got enough business, but why blow people off? That's not necessary nor is it good for your rep. It takes 30 seconds to text a quick, 'hey I got a lot going on atm, but I really want to discuss this further, please give me X amount of time and I'll get back with you...'.
So I have one last lead on a place in Grand Rapids. It's not an actual VW place, just an engine shop that I was referred to by a higher level VW shop that has been around for ages but doesn't do their own engine work like this in-house. I haven't called yet to see what they can do. I've encountered so many disappointments in the process of trying to find someone with some motivation to do good work for me. I'm starting to think I'm wasting my time. Afraid I'm gonna settle for less and get screwed in the long run. I have had that happen in the past. I don't "know people" and so when I do something I miss some stupid detail that ends up lowering the quality of what I'm trying to achieve and end up with regrets. I suppose I could send it out to one of these big shops that advertise on the internet and hope I get back what I need, but that's gonna at least double my cost and I won't know when I'll be able to get it back.

Very frustrated right now knowing what I need to do and having the money to get it done and not being able to find a damn person who can do it much less seems to want to do it anywhere within a reasonable distance.

The longer these engine parts sit on my bench the less likely they are to be put back together. And poop's gonna start getting legs and walking away. Damn it.

See I start thinking maybe I'll just buy my bearings and assemble my engine, bypassing anyone else having a look at the bore alignment or crank balance and just trust in my own observation and measurement. It may work. It may work for awhile. It may not work long. ugh. (expletive)

Balancing the crank may not be that hard to farm out at least.

Ok now that I got my panties out of their bunch, I think I'll call this last place and see what they say.

I use a local shop that builds engines for circle-track and other race cars. A crank is a crank and local beats shipping.

Thanks for that. Just reading it now. I have all the parts already. I even have a ring but not too crazy about how it looks. I have a coworker that just built his own little CNC plasma in his garage. I bet he could cut a new ring easy for me.
