I have run .028 deck on a 1.7/914 motor for~150 K with no issues. CR worked out around 8.6:1.
(no head gaskets, no base shims/gaskets) bone stock cam/everything else, 44 IDF36 carbs.
I beat the snot out of it, never saw premium fuel. Started making funny noises. Thrust face on OG cam bearing was gone.
Put a set of 2L heads (49cc chambers) and a Web73 in it, with .065" deck because heads had a step. Ran another 100K then lost a R&P, motor sat for awhile. Is getting a 090 trans shortly. (throttle cable mods needed) Had Megasquirt when it went in the squareback..
Here the octane is shown as R+M/100, IIRC Europe advertises research octane, number is higher than in ~US for same fuel, thus the "Europe has better fuel" myth. 87 "regular" here would be ~91- 93 octane in Europe.
E85, once common, has gotten harder to get around here, but still can be had just off my commute route, slightly cheaper than std E10, slightly worse fuel economy even with E85 sensor & automatic compensation, just has less energy/gallon.
E85 supposedly works out to 99-102 octane. One can drive up to a pump and buy 116 octane ~locally. (using Texans definitions of "local") note:5 gallons of C16 is ~$130ish.

Addendum to Newtons first law:
zero vehicles on jackstands, square gets a fresh 090 and 1911, cabby gets a blower.
EZ3.6 Vanagon after that.(mounted, needs everything finished) then Creamsicle.
