Chris' car (aka, "project on back burner, building Ark")

Offroad VW based vehicles have problems/insights all their own. Not to mention the knowledge gained in VW durability.

Long time no update…been dragging the old girl out from time to time. Found Glass Action bought the old molds for the Trans Am nose and put some new ‘glass on the old girl and nearly ready for a fresh paint job.

Baja made it another year still no buyer; think I’ll end up stripping it for parts this winter.

Started prepping a ‘69 chassis for a ‘57 body I picked up! Going to put on Thing spindles/cut & turned beam up front and decided to go 091 and 2x3’s on torsions in back. Nothing too serious, but I’d like to run a 33” tire in back.

Cleaning garage and found a couple pretty tired old beams and saved the best bits to make up a crude 6” over beam and gave it 5/16” turns.

Finally got chassis rolling after roughly assembling cut-turned 6” over beam with Thing spindles, 16x6 Ram rims on ‘68 Porsche pattern drums, and 235/85-16’s

Tossed a valvestem in the Ram wheel and beaded the 235/85-15, got it right around 31-1/4” tall.

Put a few hours into chassis today, finally bit the bullet and hacked off the front trans mount and offered up the 091…then with a little bit of confidence, jumped off the ledge and cut out the stock torsion housing inner anchors for the cheap torsion adjuster kit. Did a bunch of cleaning up and will have to reassemble and drag over to my buddy’s shop with 240V to burn in the thick stuff. Need to convert the solid mid mount bracket to use some 4-link bushings and to try to keep the vibration down.

Had to clearance the mid mount to fit the 091 and decided to set the transaxle back about 8mm to help the nose cone clear the torsion adjuster…measures right around 17” to the bottom of the rear trans mount with the 235/85-16 off the front and a 30x9.5 sitting on a 2x6 on the other side 😂

Almost time to bring the ‘57 in and snag the body off. 😁
