Type 4 supercharged vanagon

Post by K70 »

Hi,
With the availability of used or refurbished superchargers I am interested in a draw through carb system. Like a better modern version of the Judson.
My main concerns at the moment:
Belt drive - a system with no slippage or breaks
A big enough cfm car to draw through and not limit output
Fit under lid without cutting the body.
Engine reliability
I will be using a stock 2.0cu with low compression

Depending on what supercharger you use some belt slippage under certain conditions is good.
A Kenne Bell or Autorotor must be able to have belt slip since the gears are held to the rotors with a wedge press and not a key.
Sudden stop like a back fire or extreme rpm increase / time can put the rotors out of time and since the clearance is in the thousanths destroy the supercharger.
I originally had custom gilmer pulleys made and was informed of this by Kenne Bell so changed to 6 rib pulleys.
Other brands you will have to do your research on.
The older I get, the faster I was.

I'd say a amr500 is on the small side for even a 1600(although when I ran one on a 1641 at 4ish pounds it was a blast and ran really well) that being said a sc12 or sc14 would fit nice and yield good results. I would think a s/c from a 3800 buick or pontiac could work as well but I have no experience with the gm s/c's

Hi, thanks I didn't realise about the belt.
I had seen a clogged belt on a supercharged 2.4.
That amr is ok for small type 1 engines.
I'm looking at OE superchargers from salvage yards like Eaton. Something that does not need high rpm. Am only going to 5500rpm. The versions are many.
I need something with an inlet giving room for carbs and maybe short snout/drive.
Something like MGB V8 dual SU carburettors and manifold onto the top of the supercharger.
No intercooler.
Hopefully using carbs slightly cool the induction charge.

Look at the Mercedes M45 and M62 Eaton superchargers. Do a quick Ebay search for them for more information on them.

Then, compare Ebay prices with those on www.car-part.com. I did and got a clean M62 with the electric clutch on it in great condition for $330~ish delivered!
