bug IRS on a early KG

Post by bj »

folks,

i'm rather new here and have been doing a tremendous amount of reading...thanks for the great questions and more so the superb answers.

my question has to do with a bug IRS chassis going under a 68 ghia, which i'm building right now.

i've read other posts that says that the chassis will work if i buy and re-weld KG pans on it. is that correct?

also, what is the difference btwn the bug and KG pans other than width? could the car still bolt up

it's hard finding a good donor KG IRS chassis in the middle of the sea. bugs, however are rather plentiful and cheap.

mahalo for you help.

Why not get the IRS tranny and weld in new pivots. I was told the bug trailing arms and stuff match up and converting to IRS would be excatly the same as in a bug.

I know a guy who did exactly that. He welded Ghia pan halves onto a 74 Bug pan then put it under a 60 convertible Ghia. Its an easy swap since you may have to do pan halves anyway.

Better check with the authorities to see what paperwork they'll need. I know Hawaii's pretty strict about "Reconstructed Vehicles" (you have to get an inspection and a permit just to change the size of your wheels - unless you're a cop).

I know from first hand experience that the numbers on the body and the pan have to match in Hawaii

thanks for the replies. i've been away in New Hampshire for two weeks.

i'll check here about the numbers matching. i've never had anyone inspect or heard of anyone inspecting for the pan serial. maybe i could graft it? :-)

as long as i know i can use a bug irs pan on my 68 ghia i should be alright. there's a really cheap 70 bug for sale. what luck on my first day back home!

mahalo
