quarter seal for under the trim

I have the seal that goes between the quarter window trim and the car body. The seal is shaped like the trim. My question is, how does the seal go onto the trim? It is too small to fit around it, and if I place it in like it is, the shape of the seal is going to create something of an air space in the middle. I expected the seal to be flat. I called the company I bought it from, and they couldn't tell me anything. any suggestions. thanks
