and see it too after driving about a half hour on the freeway. I just changed plugs, wires, cap and rotor, and did the valves on my '69 Ghia. It was running a lot better around the neighborhood but once I got in on the freeway I heard a knocking sound as I accelerated 60 to 65 and then later from 55 to 60 and once I got off the freeway heard it initially out of first and second gear. Thought it was just the muffler as exhaust system is old but seems like it actually might be valve noise ... checked the oil and level is fine and doesn't feel too hot......... any ideas out there? I know one cyclinder #4 has low compression but don't think that is linked to noise and smoke.........
Thanks in advance for suggestions,
Greg
I smell smoke...
A little more information to add to this puzzle.... when adjusting valves I noticed the rotor would point to the mark on the rim of the distributor but the crankshaft pulley notches would be 180 degrees from where they were supposed to be, in other words I wasn't seeing the notch but the other side of the pulley marked by some paint. My wires were connected as if this (notch in the distributor) was #4 cylinder and then rotating around counter clockwise was #1, #2 and #3. So #4 was the one pointing furthest to the back of the engine or at "5 o'clock" as some guides describe it.
I initially tried to change the wires back to what should be the original #1 position and began to adjust the valves accordingly only then I found #2 intake to be impossible to gap correctly.
I am running an 009 distributor, which I am beginning to think I have to pull and rotate the engine to TDC and reinstall. If that is the case how is it that it ran like this before and what damage may I have done driving it like this?
