HELP!!!

Post by rpinkfloyd12 »

My fuel injected bus was running fine until I ran out of gas today, about fifteen minutes after I refilled the tank, the bus started acting as though it is starving for fuel. I can hardly go over 15 mph. What is happening and how much is this going to cost???

rpf12,

i suspect you have a rusty gas tank and you've sucked a bunch of rust into the fuel lines and filter, now you are not getting enough fuel due to a blockage.

start by replacing the fuel filter. inspect the lines while you are at it and replace if needed, they are often in bad shape and bad fuel lines in a FI bus are a serious fire hazard. if you are replacing any lines, make sure to get good quality FI fuel hose, the best place to find it is at a mercedes dealer, they have excellent quality 7.5mm fuel hose and high quality clamps.

if that doesn't fix it, you may have to remove the tank and have it cleaned.

Prior to pulling the tank, the electric fuel pump does not appreciate being run "dry". Clamp the fuel line between the tank and the pump, have a empty clean coffe can near by and then pull the fuel line off the pump, point the hose into the coffe can and release the clamp. If fuel flows then the tank is not plugged. Reconnect that line if fuel flows and pull the fuel line from its connection at the FI feed manifold in the engine compartment. Crank the bus over, don't forget to put the hose in the coffee can. If no fuel flows I have some bad news for you. Used pumps go from $30 to $100 and rebuilt seem to hover around $200. Do not test a used pump DRY. Hook a fuel line from a gas can to it, , power the pump up and let the fuel squirt. If fuel does not shoot out in a nice stream then the used pump is no good.
