Weber 34 ICT on Stock 1.8L

Post by chach »

Hello,
Have a problem with my '73 camper. Stock 1.8L engine, replaced the carbs with a set of 34 ICT's that I had off a squareback running a 1641. Engine idles fine, no problems however when rev'ing the engine, I get a popping out of the exhaust (more pronounced when underload). Furthermore, I have massive lack of top end power, leading me to believe that I'm running lean. However richening the mixture past a certain point only hurts more than it helps across the powerband. Any recommendations on jetting for the carbs as I believe that is the problem or what you guys may think what else could be wrong?

To rehash, completely stock 1.8L in a '73 camper with weber 34 ICT's popping when underload.

Thanks in advance,

Kris K.

From my experience with Progressive Webers, the Idle jet affects the transition from idle at least thru 2000 rpm.....so larger idle jet would he lp in that range....from there you have to balance the main jet and the air-correction jet. Popping is definately a sign of too lean. Its a fine balance...but i believe you can find a happy medium...even if it runs a bit rich at idle.

If you have some success, then post it, since i have set of 34icts that id like to use on a 2L

Hi,
I have a 73 westy with the same problem,and I found a exhaust leak
right between the heads and header.Fix it and the poping when away.
check for intake and exhaust leak I was told.
Cheers!

Hi bootomend,
My westy is a 73,with a 1800 dual weber 34itc.Someday I would love
to built something with more torque,I sometimes travel with a trailer
with an atv in the back.I wish,I could go up hill without downshifting
a the way down to 2nd gear.Maybe someday Raby will reveal some details
of is camper special motor :)
Cheers

You can build a little bit of extra power into that thing yourself. I just rebuilt my engine by watching Jakes video, reading the Wilson book and posting questions on this forum. ( I also was lucky enough to have had a forum member stop by a few days to help out too!) I was Dyno'ed at 87 Hp and 107 FT/LBS torque. I'm gonna put a BAS exhaust on it and that should raise it up some more. How much... dunno.

I didn't do anything very extensive to it. I raised the comp. Put in a slightly hotter cam. Balenced everything and put on a set of Kadrons, which I'm still sorting out. They are not hard to adjust, I just haven't had much time.

I havent hauled anything yet but I'm planning to build a light weight trailer and I'll be loaded up with about 1000 lbs (people and gear) on a regular basis. I drove it tonight and I was going 85 MPH and I had plenty of gas left on the pedal. I figure that should be good for about 60 with a load on a decent grade.

must be a westy/ict/orange paint thing going on... i have a 1.8L in my 75 westy with the ICTs. after some serious work at getting my linkage balanced out, the rig will do 65 on the freeway easily. however, i seem to be running a touch hot after awhile. i did not rejet, but i would suspect that if they are consistant with other weber to VW kits they idle jets are too small for the 1.8L. i am going to go up one size and see what that does... remember, lean is HEAT and heat kills!
