Should I get a new coil with my Pertronix?

Post by LaTwatta »

Howdy, Folks:

I just ordered a Pertronix for my '71 411 Sedan and curious if I should use the stock coil that is on the car. Or should I get the Flame Thrower? Will the stock coil work well with the electronic ignition???

If you're interested in seeing my car, it's at http://www.type4.org/pictures/1971/brenda.jpg/view - the pic is from this past August when I just finished painting it and was in the middle of putting chrome, bumpers, etc. back on.

I installed a Compu fire unit in my 009 and do not have any complaints.. just using a Bosch Blue coil.. Not sure for a TIV but I can't imagine it will be different.

Stock coil runs just fine, have a pertronix on all my Type 4 engines and they run great with stock blue coils!

The original long, black, fat, Bosch coil in the 412 is a better coil than the blue coil....but I guess that depends upon which blue coil....I hear there are five. Ray

The coils EXPLODED?

The coils exploded??? I have had coils fail - they would produce a faint, yellowish spark, but I've never heard of one exploding. What would cause that?
