'MANGO DREAM' 1302S CABRIO from AUSTRALIA

Post by hypo-vw »

Image
this is a before shot of my 72' 1302s karmann cabriolet . The cab was imported from colorado USA in 1995 to Australia . The cab was in very poor condition at the time and I undertook a full restoration on it with a few enhancements .

Image
everything that could be chromed or re-chromed was done so for a spectacular look .

Image
with the body fitted back onto the pan the suspension detail is evident .

Image
I built and detailed a 2-litre type-4 engine with a garrett T-25 turbo fitted and a SU carburettor . The exhaust exits out through the original apron .

Image
the engine is fitted to the cabrio .

Hi Doc , thanks for the nice remarks . The lady in the photo is my wife of 18 years , Lisa . She is the most supportive wife any bloke could want . She assists me with the running of our VW business , helps prepare the cars for shows , always helps out at racing events and somehow finds the time to raise our 2 beautiful children . I feel like the luckiest bloke on the planet sometimes................even when I was building this cab , she would be at the shop with me sometimes till 11pm , helping me to reassemble the doors whilst the kids would be asleep with blankets and pillows on the 4-post hoist ramps .

Lucky guy! Please keep posting. Your obvious expertise will be very valuable to many STF members.

Hope 2007 is a great one down under! Maybe it's the year I'll get to come visit with my bride of 32 years. (She learned to stay out of the shop a long time ago.....)

Cheers,

See!!! Ephry's asking just a few of the questions inquiring minds want to know.

If I ever get to make the Australia/NZ run (and I been thinking about it for many years), I'll be sure and contact the vw community. After the airfare, I'll be needin' a free Foster's or two.

A turboed type 4 engine has got to be super fun in a type 1 based platform, no matter what size.

a 2.0 turbo with the right components, and appropiate led foot can be quite fun I am sure.

Details are always welcomed, and pics as well. I defintiely want to see what the firewall looks like with the piping, as that is an area that lacks a lot of space to begin with.

The engine runs really sweet . With the hood down on the freeway at 65mph you can't hear the engine or the exhaust , just the sound of the air blowing through your hair . I have fitted a really good sound system to the cab with a 12" subwoofer behind the back seat , and I have to turn it down as it is too loud without any background noise .
A quick stab on the throttle when cruising at this speed see's the needle disappear off the end of the speedo in seconds .

Engine is a 2 litre . 94mm mahle type-1 pistons . balanced 71mm crank & rods . Turbo grind cam . 1800 ULP heads 41 x 34mm . CR- 6.1:1 . Hydraulic tappets .

I designed the turbo system so that the body of the cab did not have to be modified or altered in any way . The front engine pipes have been manufactured to come through the engine tin and clear the firewall .

I like it. I like it a lot. Love the design of the header and the routing. It makes it a lot easier to do this when using a 911 styled shroud for sure.

Are the pistons rebushed for the 24mm pin, or are you using type 1 rods? Just another question. :D

Sounds like the engine will run on super bad gas and still be a dream to drive.

BTW, lucky man to have a supportive family with the hobbie. Congrats all around.

Congrats again man and thanks for sharing.

I am using the type-4 2-litre rods with a custom made gudgeon bush to suit the 22mm type-1 pins , rather than the standard 24mm pins that the type-4 engine has . This keeps the reciprocating weight down and allows the engine to rev a lot quicker .

A couple more pics of the engine detail and ceramic coating , Wayne .

That is totally cooooool .. wishing yankees could do this type of good work.

Now it's the honesty time.. is there an airbrush of the mother in law under the decklid?

Dumb question.. how do you find a Colorado car... and how much BS is it to import it to Ossie?

No , no air-brushing of the mother-in-law anywhere on this cab , there isn't a panel that has enough wrinkles in it ... ha ha .
However there is air-brushing under the engine lid and the pics are following .

As for the importing process , I did it the easy way . One of my mates imported the cab to restore it and when he ran in to marital problems he had to off load it , and I happen to be in the right place at the right time and purchased it as an incomplete resto .
This was a hard resto for me as I had never done a cab before and I purchased the cab totally disassembled and incomplete . It was missing bumpers , steering , suspension , guages , front screen , front quarter vent windows , front seats , engine , transmission , axles ..... and the list goes on .
Maybe it would have been easier to tell you what I did get . Body , doors , window regulators , door glass scratched , rear quarter glass scratched , rear glass scratched , complete hood assembly , bonnet , 4 guards , engine lid , rusty chassis , rear seat and boxes of junk .
I had to repair and assemble the whole car to make sure that everything fitted , then take it all apart to detail each and every item .

Here is a couple of pics of the chassis .
