Type 4 / 914 starter

Post by zazothex »

I'm setting up my 901 (1971 914) porsche tranny into my type 1 1914 with the stock 200mm flywheel and clutch. I am told the 914 starter will match up, but is this the same as a type 4 starter? if so, what year?

I can answer PART of your question.

ANY 914 starter is a Type IV starter.
Also a Porsche 6 cylinder starter will work as well. (Higher HP starter)

I HAVE NO IDEA IF THEY FIT your specific ring gear on your flywheel.

If you have a typical Type IV flywheel.. No probs.

Stick around and few other fellas will chime in. As I am not very familiar with conversions.

thanks for the quick reply. I've the standard 200mm Type 1 flywheel that meshed just fine with my previous tranny; a 72ish IRS.

All ACVW 12v ring gears are the same.

The std 914 starter (also late bus/vanagon) will work fine.

As mentioned, the 914/901 has a shorter input shaft, but it MIGHT reach the gland nut on a T1. You will need the later style (71+) pressure plate, but I think that's standard.

With a T4, the 914 had the input shaft bearing in the flywheel.
Addendum to Newtons first law:
zero vehicles on jackstands, square gets a fresh 090 and 1911, cabby gets a blower.
EZ3.6 Vanagon after that.(mounted, needs everything finished) then Creamsicle.

I also heard that an "automatic" starter would work. What are these offof, or are they aftermarket?

The "automatic" starter would be for a T3, and I don't think it will reach the ring gear in a 901 or 091 tranny.

Nice starter for a T1 tranny.
