30 days and a sawsall...

Started with this $300 donor...

About 3 weeks and $700 later...

Most of the money is in the tires, the set ran $428. Cheap fun, and on it's way to being a daily driver, once I fix a few oil leaks.

I've since added a front tube bumper, waiting on new (to me) exhaust for added ground clearance, and need to buy or build a rear cage / tube bumper.

Progress? Well, other than being down for a week with a bent and worn thru pushrod tube, it's gone great. Just got it running again and took it for a test drive.

I've done the 3/8" cut and turned beam that picked up 2" of ground clearance, added an ATV winch, and ran some rough trails with some Jeeps. Everyone was surprised I was able to make it with no help, other than when I high centered on a tree. I used the ATV winch and engine to power myself over that. I anchored to the bumper of one of the Jeeps, he stood beside the Jeep and watched.

Tires

Post by Calvin »

oktr6r hey great job on your VW, I looked at all your pics and have a question please. I have a 70 bug but want to leave the stock fenders on, what size tires can I put on it to raise it a little but not scrape the fenders?
Thank you.

I couldn't say, I went to fiberglass Baja fenders right off. There are other ways to raise the car cheaply... Cut and turn front beam, re-index rear torsions. I'm running 14" wheels and tires and the car's 5" higher than stock right now. I'm trying out some 31/10.50-15 tires on stock rims, that'll gain another 2". Not much chance of you doing that with stock fenders though.
